Thanks, Shay.
Feed your spawn, you don't want them jumping out of the tank!

...as long as you're not tossing in the towel!
Well, I've been working on the canopy, installing the lights for the last few nights... it's take some work, but I'm making progress. I'll send pictures when I'm done.

Well, I got the lights installed in the canopy - 3 400W DE HQI Hamilton Reefstar 14K, 2 160W URI Super Actinic VHO (Coralife ballast), and 4 sets of Current Lunar Link White Moon Lights. It's still out the garage, but here is a pic of the test burn.
Next...on to plumbing...

Progress Update
Well, I got an e-mail from Brent Barr - he made a good decision to spend more time with his family, but it means I would have to wait an undetermined amount of time to get my skimmer and calcium reactor. Soooo... I decided to go another route: AquaC EV240 Skimmer (a bigger one wouldn't fit in my cabinet/sump), and the Korralin 3002 calcium reactor (I've got a 1502 for my 75 gallon). I figure if the EV240 isn't enough, I can always add a second skimmer. I found that most of the skimmers for large tanks are BIG...
I'm waiting on the plumbing until I have all the equipment here. I don't want to re-do PVC.

Muriatic Acid and Acetone?
Bubba, I've only seen the acid/acetone wash in reference to decontaminating a tank exposed to copper and that has generated a ton of debate. Did you use the acid/acetone wash on your new tank? If so, may I ask what was the purpose? Or am I missing the punchline on an inside joke...

Phil, It was a continuing story started on another thread - Jack used some brass fittings on his tank and contaminated it with copper. Acid/acetone wash is to decontaminate a tank that has had copper in it (since copper binds to glass). I didn't acid wash mine.

Well, I got it all the equipment and got it all plumbed up... so I decided to take it for a test drive. Filled it with tap water. Good thing I did.. found a leak in one of my connections.
Better to find it now than later...Anywho.... the electrician was supposed to show this morning and put in two more 15 amp circuits so I can run the lights and chillers without popping circuit breakers, but he no showed.... called his cell phone... no answer. Why can't they just call and say they are running late? ...or they don't want the job? It would be much easier for everyone involved. Can ya tell I'm mad about the leak and kicking the electrician?! ![]()

I'll get some today. I *THINK* I've got the leaks fixed, and the electrician called to say he is coming today... when he is done, and I get the tank filled, I'll get a quick shot or two.

That looks great Bubba! Why did you reduce the PVC so much after the pump though?

?? I didn't reduce it. The pump inlet and outlet are 1 inch threaded fittings. I used 1 inch PVC. I went with 1¼ inch ball valves with reducing bushings on the ends to connect to the 1" PVC pipe. The 1" ball valves had a reduced-size hole going through it, and the 1¼" valves had 1" holes through them. I did the same for the unions and used 2" ball valves and 1½" PVC pipe on the returns. I haven't connected the calcium reactor or chiller yet. The chiller is a drop in that fits in the sump, and calcium reactor will have its output going to the protein skimmer connector thingy (John Guest speedfit fitting). I also got my Universal Power Supply today to keep the pumps running while the generator kicks in during power outages. I decided not to get an ozonizer for this tank. I've got one on the 75 gallon tank, but it only runs for a day or two every month or so (the ORP probe shows that it doesn't need to run more often). So I decided to just connect it to each tank for a few days each month since it doesn't run constantly. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I found a nice small Ryobi 10" table saw at Home Depot for $99 including the stand. It sure makes nicer cuts than the hack saw or cable saw on the PVC! (I got a special plastic cutting blade.) Had I found this baby sooner, I might have tried to make my own sump. (I know... "coulda, shoulda, woulda...") Bubba P.S. Thanks for the kind remarks, and yes, the electrician got his stuff done. ...and next time, I'm gonna count the number of trips to Home Depot and post it as the tank gets set up...

Ahhh!!! Good thinkin'! I wish I would thought of that. As far as PVC cutting, have you seen the ratcheting cutters? They are about $10 and work FANTASTIC!

Bubba, The trips never end, they just go on and on and on and on and............................................... ............ Welcome to the world of large tanks my friend. The only thing you can hope is that you learn from the many trips that you take. This is too much fun, isn't it?? ![]() |
