Anybody using a tunze wavebox or a wave 2k

I am looking in to getting a surge device, the tunze wavebox or maybe the wave 2k anyone out there have any experience with either, or know how to make one on the cheap?

I have seen several Tunze Waveboxes and they are very impressive! The Wave2K was plgued with reliability issues, namely the belt would break routinely.

Steven,

I think the concept of these devices are brilliant, but question the feasibility of using them. First, It seems like a very unsightly piece of equipment. Secondly, wouldn't they have to be removed often for maintenance? This seems like quite the task since they are large and internal.

I have thought about that, but with the great reviews the tunze streams get, and with their limited maintenance I was thinking it might not be and issue as far as regular servicing. The size is an isse but my thought was I might be able to get rid of a powerhead or two, wouldn't that be nice? I have two seio 820's and one 1100.

I like it is all a matter of perspective. The waveboxes are certainly smaller and in my opinion less ugly than internal overflow boxes. Plus, I pull my Tunze protein skimmers out of the sump every six months for maintenance and there are about the same size as a wavebox.

You know, I thought they were bigger than they actually are. I just looked them up on Tunze and they seem to be fairly small for what they do.

I thought one of the problems would be water sloshing over the side of the aquarium....

I have a 100g 5' acrylic so I am not to worried about sloshing, I would like to see one set up in someones tank though, not the wave action i have seen that and it is fantastic I want to see its position and how big it really looks and how submersed it is, like the depth it needs to be at.

Hi Guys,

I set up my Wavebox on the front panel of my 5'x2'x2' display ... it's a little distracting at first but you get used to it

The wave that I achieved at my first attempt was pitiful and it took me quite a while to get a decent 1/2" surface wave. I have now also mounted a 6100 Stream to work in unison with the WB and the improvement is awesome. Not so much the movement at the surface but the movement of the water body through the whole column. It actually looks like a very natural ocean pulse. Combined with my tidal motion of 2 x 6000 streams on a 7095 controller, it really rocks!

It's a good idea to run the water in the display an inch lower than normal, and the position of the weir/s is important to avoid 'slurping' of the Durso. Tunze recommend a centre weir as there is the least difference top to bottom of the wave at that point. Mine is at the end ... nothing I can do about that :-)

Cheers,

Tone

I have an over flow bow on my tank, but it cannot be moved. How was the wave after you got it adjusted and B4 you installed the streams? I am just trying to judge if I should get the wave box or just a couple of streams. What did the surge of the water look like with the 1/2" wave. The tunze site says you can get a 1" wave on a 59" long tank, do you think that is possible to achieve without the extra streams.
Thank you for answering it seems like no one here had the tunze wave box.

Thumbs up Re: Anybody using a tunze wavebox or a wave 2k

I just bought a used wavebox. Setup was easy, except that tuning the resonant frequency was a little difficult. The instant that it was tuned in, it produced about a 1" wave in my 110g tank. The resonant frequency is a bit fast for my 60" tank, so a smaller tank might be a pretty fast wave. I would guess that 48" is about mimimum. I have the power set on min and it is about right, but I would bet that you could crank it up and have little surfers going. Very impressive power. Not a pretty addition and it takes up a lot of room, but my creatures love it. No other powerheads are needed, I pulled out all four. It comes with a photocell which kills it when the lights turn off. It also has a "feed mode" that kills it for 8 minutes, but turns the prop every 20 secs to keep out creatures who would otherwise be crushed in it.
