Unhappy Starphire scratched :(

Just received my starphire tank that I've been planning and waiting on forever! When I unwrapped it, i found a scratch. First, I thought it might be silicone, but this was the only one that didn't clean away. i can feel it with my fingernail and it is dead center of the tank!

Can this be repaired? the tank manufacturer said it can be "filled".

what can I do?

For the price you paid for the starphire tank, I wouldn't accept it as brand new and scratched... unless there is a MAJOR discount for filling, AND the filling job is acceptable.

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...

The windshield of my wife's car was chipped and "repaired" by a glass company, but it was not perfect. I would prepare for a fight. Did you pay by credit card?

That's why I hate recommending him anymore. It's too hit or miss with him. Besides that, it looks like you received this 600-gal tank at least three months late if memory serves me?

Yes, glass can be filled. It will probably be good enough that you won't be able to tell where the scratch was once the tank is filled with water.

I know that I would be extremely unhappy if I were in your shoes. Unfortunately, you don't have too many options here because of where the tank came from, etc.

All of the options that others might suggest are out of the question for obvious reasons. I think you should call around locally to find a glass repair company willing to come out and do the repair. Tell them that it's Starphire glass. Get them to come out and look at the scratch and tell you what they think they can do and how much it will cost. Probably won't cost all that much.

After that, you're on your own. I would probably go ahead and have it repaired and then I would call you-know-who and tell him I wanted a refund. How much of a refund is up to you. I wouldn't go nuts but I would expect something substantial enough to calm my nerves. I don't know how much that is but I guess it all depends on the total amount you paid for the tank. Since this is a 600-gal tank made with laminated Starphire (2x12mm), you paid a pretty penny. You might ask for a 10% refund plus the cost of repair.

Other than that, I don't know what to say except that I know how you must feel.

P.S. -- I forgot to ask if there was anything to indicate that the scratch might have happened in transit? If so, it's a shipping claim with the carrier.

Memory is dead on! 3 months late. It was the hardest 3 months ever!

When the tank was finnaly shipped, it ended up at the wrong place (a pet store). Can you imagine the look on the employees face when that thing showed up Suffice to say, the tank was handled way more than it should have been.

Can't really tell if the scratch was during transit or before. As many times as this thing was handled before it arrived, there is not telling.

I can't even describe the amount of dissapointment I feel. Luckily I paid with a credit card, so I am "protected". The thing is, I don't want protection, I want what I had dreamed of having. The whole reason I went with starphire is so that I don't have to deal with the whole scratching issue. I would have been better off with acrylic

So far I have not found anybody willing to repair this thing. I may ask for another sheet of glass to be shipped and I can get somebody to put it on for me?

I feel like I've been kicked in the..b-you know,...by a mule!
