For total circulation, you are looking at about 400-800 gph.

are you talking about total water circulation, water from sump or just pumps to move the water around. i am going to build a 40 gallon breeder using all the recomendations i have passed around, kinda use what you preach kinda thing. anywase i planed on useing 2 maxijet 1200 for circulation and a remora skimmer because i recomend it all the time to. this should be a cheeper setup becasue it requires no sump and lets the rock and skimmer do there own parts.

Re: 40 gallon GPH?

I have a similar question... bc I am putting up a 30 gallon cube.. and besides the pump the Biocube comes with for the sump...I want to add 2 powerheads for a wavermaker.....but what is the right size for the 2 so that there isnt too much water flow?

Re: 40 gallon GPH?

Depends a lot on what you have in the tank and how it is arranged. SPS can use a lot more flow that soft corals. I would say either way, 20-30 times the water volume is a good starting place. I have a 47g cube set up now with 3 Koralia 1's in it for 1200 gph and it is nowhere near what i really need to keep things clean IMO.
