Skimmers - Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
A Newbie here needs help.
This tank will be a Fish and Live Rock only tank. I have a 46-Bowfront I m not going to use a wetdry filter, I'm trying to decide on a AquaC Remora -OR- a Coralife Super Skimmer (125-gal.model). In the future I may upgrade to a 100-gal or larger tank. Which Skimmer is my best overal choice and why ? ? Would the Coralife perform better ?? & why ? ? Any help would be greatly appreciated...... Welcome to Reefland, Reef22!
The Remora has a much better reputation than the Coralife Super Skimmer (although either would be adequate). If you upgrade to a 100 gallon tank or better, you would need a bigger skimmer than either one.

i would recomend the remora pro if you plan to go to a larger tank later. guess it depends on how large you want to go but less than a 120 it would at least get you started as the tank fills up then you could upgrade.

I like both that you mention, with either you should get the add on bubble trap. However keep in mind your skimmer is the single biggest investment you are going to make on a FOWLR, it is better to get it right the first time. THough the Remora and SS are good for Hang on skimmers, neither is in the same league as a MRC, Barr, ASM, Euro Reef, ETSS, those are all skimmers that are much more powerful, and should never need replacing.

Reef22, Like Poseidon has mentioned, these two skimmers are good for HOB but there really are not any good HOB skimmer (I have read the HOB Deltec is nice) These might get you by on a 46 but when you jump to the 100 your going to be way behind. I kind of mentioned the baby ASM as more of a hint, even though its better skimmer then the two mentioned its too small for the 100. When you decide to upgrade tanks take a long hard look at using a sump, they sure make the tank look a lot nicer. |
