Hi all-- I have a relatively stupid question. I purchased a tank from a friend (her father who cared for it passed away) I was given all equipment including a protein skimmer. I know nothing about how they work. I have carbon in the basket thing where it was when I got it (replaced it tho).
Should there be a filter somewhere in there? And should there be water going up the tube into the top compartment or is that only where nasty stuff goes? (currently there is nothing up there, and nothing seems to be going). Please help Thank you. |

Carbon should be to filter the air coming out - it is used when an ozonizer is connected to the protein skimmer. It is unnecessary if you aren't using an ozonizer. No filter is necessary on a protein skimmer.
Foam should be going up the tube into the top compartment (not water). Do you have a clue what brand it is? You may be able to find an owner's manual or some kind person that can help you adjust it if we knew what brand.... if you don't know the brand, can you post a pic?

Thanks-- I do understand how it is supposed to work now. I have it set up and it is flowing. Should there constantly be foam? If yes, I have a problem because there isn't any, going into the cup or otherwise.
You have been most helpful so far-- hope to hear back. Thanks |

Foam comes and goes.. if your tank is newly set up, it may be a few days before foam forms. Also, foam is sorta picky - if you put your hand in the tank, your skimmer may quit producing foam for a few hours to a few days (from the oil on your hands). Certain foods make skimmers foam up or form no foam at all. Cigarette smoking in the room inhibits foam. Good luck. Be patient. If you water levels are set appropriately and it is getting adequate air, you'll get foam sooner or later.

Thanks so much! I will keep trying-- may never get foam tho- as my hands are in the tank every other day and there are smokers in the house too. At least I know why now!!!
