    G2x CUSTOM with ric mod/sedra 5000 problems

Ok this is what I have. I have a ASM G2x (G2x due to hight issues) with the ric mod and two sedra 5000 pumps. This thing SKIMS, when I am not having problems with the pumps! I had one just Stop and one that chewed uo the impeller and magnet Twice! The second time the inside of the shaft housing got all chewed up! I have only had this thing for a month and these pumps are nothing but problems. On the other hand ASM and my LFS have fixed it every time but this is getting old real fast. Its down more than running! I've been thinking of getting rid of it and getting with the Deltec. Has anyone had these issues?

    YIKES!!!

How about switching to MAG pumps? You could DIY some holes and ripples on the mag impellar to make it chop up the bubbles. Maybe a couple of 9.5's?

I have the same skimmer. Your right, it SKIMS whenever its working.
I either have to get a 4th pump. (the thing is a year old) or get another
skimmer. I love it when it works. It really does a great job. But it works about
    75% of the time.
Can anyone suggest a skimmer that works just as well, but has a well
    designed pump??
    thanks.

Hi Shellie, as far as the impellar goes, I would maybe drill a few VERY small holes on each blade of the impellar. Doing so would decrease the flow, but should chop up the bubbles nicely. A dremel tool would be ideal for this.

Boy Shellie, that one will vary based on what skimmer you have. I have no experience with recirculating skimmers YET, but the ones I have seen use larger pumps to recirculate the water, and small pumps to feed the skimmer. Check out MRC's recirculating skimmers, or ASM, or ER, and they all have similar setups.

My G2 has a Sedra 3500 and it has been running for two years. I just took it apart for only the second time the other day. The impeller was pretty much fused to the shaft by calcium deposits. A couple of hours in vinegar and it is running like a champ. I hope that the Sedras aren't like Rios. I had one of those disintegrate once into a steaming mass of black goop. Fortunately, it was in a salt mixing bucket, not my tank.

    Doug,
Most of my problem was the 5000s are to big for the ASM G2x so I went back to the 3500s. The problem was that one of the 3500 impeller fused to the casing due to over heating. The other 3500 had the wrong impeller in it. After all this got fixed the skimmer works like a champ. I guess that the saying of BIG IS BETTER, MAY NOT ALWAYS BE TRUE!

they are not. i have all sedra pumps. even the one i got like 10 years ago. all still going strong. i aslo have the G3 with a sedra pump. they are nothing like rios. IMO they are the best in sump pump out there. like he said he was using the wrong pump. increase the head pressure like that with any pump and it will just wear it down, like it did.
