Installing drain vents or vent traps

I'm not sure if either one of those are the correct name. What I'm talking about is installing a "T" or a wye fitting at the pipe going into your sump or filter bag. Then running a 6"-7" open pipe out the top of that fitting. From my understanding this is suppose to create a smoother flow. Dose anyone have any experience doing this and could tell what it's really all about?

Yes, I understand the concept behind the durso and stockman pipes. I'm referring the other end of the drain going directly into the sump. Instead of a straight pipe going into the sump I've noticed more and more people are adding a T or wye fitting and running one pipe into the sump and another extending out the top of the fitting. It has something to do with equalizing the pressure at the exit of the pipe allowing for better flow. We talked about this at a club meeting and I recently had my whole house re-plumbed because of a broken pipe in the slab and the plumbers installed them on all the piping in the attic.
I can't find a pic of the tanks I saw it on right now but here's something similar installed on the drain of a camper.

I guess my mind was making more out of this than it is. I see now it's the same principle.
