I am plumbing a sump with a single 2" outlet. I wanted to put a 1.5" tee and plumb 2 hammerhead pumps. would this work or would this cause too much of a restriction?

I'm sure some mechanical engineer will correct me if I'm wrong, but using the formula of Pi times diameter to get the cross sectional area,
2" x Pi < 2 x 1.5" x Pi
You would have more flow to your pumps with 2-1.5" outlets or approximately the same with one 3" outlet. Also any angles in the pipe will decrease the flow further. You don't want to restric flow on the "in" side of your pump - it damages the motor.

Just my theoretical opinion (which may be wrong).

The cross sectional area of a 2" ID pipe would be 3.14159 sq. in.

The cross sectional area of a 1.5" ID pipe would be 1.76714 sq. in., two 1.5" ID pipes would equal 3.53428 sq. in.

The formula is not Pi x diameter, it is Pi r^2. That's Pi (3.14159) times the radius squared.

When you say 1.5" tee, I assume you mean 1.5"x1.5"x2", right? If so, you could do that if you want to, assuming you can find such a fitting. The only reducing tee I could find online was 2"x2"x1.5" and that's just the opposite of what you need.

If you reduce your 2" outlet to 1.5", you will reduce the flow by almost half -- a 1.5" pipe provides only 56% as much flow as a 2" pipe. You need to find a way to come out of the sump with 2" pipe and then split that into two 1.5" pipes for your two 1.5" intake pumps.

cool! worst case scenario I can get a 2" tee ( 2"x2"x2"), then get a reducer for the two 2" outlets.

this is such a relief. with all of the hassels and aggravations I have had with this tank, this is the first time I can hold my fist in the air and say...
"WOO-HOO!"
