sump question
If I put substrate in my sump would it help with lowering nitrates. I have live rock rubble in sump now.

A DSB is best utilized in the main display, I have recently started hearing about DSB buckets, but I have no experience with them.

The best thing to lower nitrates is time. Let the system cycle and it will remove nitrates. Even a shallow sand bed will harbour some nitrifying bacteria. I agree with Mike that the DSB (if you're having one) should be at least as big as the display -- and for most of us, that means IN the display.

Thanks for the advice I decided to put some macro algae in the sump but decided against the sand in the sump. I currently have a 2 inch live sand bed in main tank and the nitrates do seem to be lowering. Once again thanks for advice.
