Can't really come up with a good answer for that one... Sorry...
why are hang-on and canister/external filters more expensive than the internal type when they have the same or more water output? i can figure out why it would be a bit more expensive but the hang-on and canister/external filters and more then 3 times the price and with less water output. WHY? *cries*
Can't really come up with a good answer for that one... Sorry...

Supply and demand
Perhapse they sell far more internal filter than they do external.
Remember the fresh water market is far larger than marine and the vast majority of freshwater owners use internal filters.
