Question Overactive Urchin

HI All
I have recently upgraded in my refugium to an urchin skimmer.
I have a 55 with 80 ish lbs live rock and 2 clowns and a cleaner shrimp are the inhabitants with some corals.

When I set it up yesterday it started to skim ....and skim and skim and skim...

It has been taking out about 4-5 gal per 12 hour period. The water it is skimming is cloudy and I had no skimmer running for a while so I am not sure why its making so much. I am really glad I got the one with a drain.

Anyway what suggestions are there for this. Should It slow down after a bit the manual said It shouldnt skim in the beginning? Not sure?

NICEREEF,

That is an excessive amount. Do you have the collection cup all the way down? If so, you might try raising it to it's highest level and then lowering it from there to get your preferred production. Also, what pump are you using?

But if you removing 10 gallons per day, something is not correct. I would raise the collection cup so that the product collected was a dry, dark liquid.

I agree with Reefland, no way should that skimmer be remving that much water.

I have almost 150 gallons of water between my sump and tank, and my skimmer is a MRC beckett that is driven at over 1000GPH and I don't come ANYWHERE near that kind of waste. For a tank your size, I would think 4-5 OUNCES a day would be a lot!
