my drilled tank designe

ok so i have been avoiding doing any work today buy designeing my next tank, it gonna be driled for a closed loop system and a sump tank.

the questions i have are:

will designe actually work?

are the holes the right size, to big, to small?

can you reckomend a pump that is quite as the tank is in my bedroom?

i want about a 1000ltph out of the 4 holes on the sides what size pump will do this?
the pump will be about 2' below than the tank.

any improvements you would make.

I like that design for a closed loop..You might want to think about using an Ocean Motions for random flow (can't find the link)

I'd suggest a Sequence Reef Flo Dart for your pump

cool i like this, but its some what out of my price range.

I think this will be a bit overkill on a tank as small as mine.
it would give me about 3000gph out of each outlet in a 41 gal tank.

I think the reason he recommended the Ocean Motion is that you will not get 250gph from each output using a 1000gph pump. The majority of the flow will come out of 1, or maybe 2 outputs of your 4. I would cut down the outputs or you will have to use something that limits them at different times.

and I suggested the dart because its silent and very effecient..Using 1" pipe will only give you about 1500 gph, maybe a little more. You can always tweek the flow down to your liking, it wont hurt the pump.

golfish, didnt know i could do that and not hurt the pump, do you mean like useing a ball valve or something and half closeing it to limit the flow?

Yeah, Ball valve or gate valve. I'm sure you know this but just incase..You'll want to have ball valves on ech side of the pump along with unions so you can remove it for maint.

A dart will definitly be overkill on a 41 gallon tank.

Also on a CLS the location of the pump doesn't matter......there is no effect on head w/ a CLS

A velocity pump will make for a very nice CLS pump and very quiet! Make sure to match the plumbing to the sinlet size of the pump. Never restrict it!

Also be sure to use true union BV before and after the pump as well as some before the returns so you can control flow at spots if needed.


Here is a picture of my setup. I have a DART pump, a spray bar and four returns!

I flow about 1800 GPH through the spray bar, and about 400GPH at each nozzle! Pluss w/ the BV I can divert 100% flow to the spray bar to really push the crap out from under the rock!

What I meant was, if you use a pump of 1000gph, 4 separate outputs will not work, it is too many to being running water through. As an example, I was messing with a MAG 18 on a CLS and could only get water out of 2 outputs, at 1800gph. So if you want to have 4 outputs from the CLS, limit them so that only 2 are open at any given time.

lol, for some reason I thought the tank was bigger. I didn't pay all that much attention to the dimensions. I wouldn't say "overkill" because the pump can be tweeked down and the more head the less wattage it uses...I do agree that it might be a little much, ok, a lot much...

ok thanks scott great info ill change it to two less powerful pumps instead of just the one.

nope didnt know this, thank god you told me because it would be a SOB to do maint on the pump with out them!!!
