Purchasing RO/DI Unit

I am getting a ro unit this year for Christmas. Problem is I have no idea what really to look for in one and I honestly dont want to do the search and read for hours/days to find out. LOL Im lazy...

Is RO alone fine or should I go ahead and do DI aswell? What would you suggest for the $200 price range. I was looking at the Kent Marine Maxxima 24 GPD RO/DI System or the SpectraPure Maxpure 25 GPD RO/DI System. Both seem to be good units but then again I am not educated on what matters or not. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Look at the 4 stage units. I bought the Corilife and it's seems to be doing very well. Friends test the incoming and the outgoing water, and says it's reading very well. So it's working good for me, and it only ran me $150 plus tax, tags, and registation.

Either one is a good unit.....I've been using a Spectrapure CSD-80 for 7+ years. Of the two you mentioned I think the kent is a better deal cause its cheaper...

Spectrapure does have great customer service tho.

You got to have DI, that's what really polishes the water.

If I were in teh market for one today, I would give the Maxcap from SpectraPure a try. Ther claim of longer lasting DI resin (which is the one that exhausts quickly) is intriguing.

Russ is awesome with customer support and he spent hours on the phone with me since I bought mine helping with various things. It's well built and does a good job.

It wasn't the setup. It was the whole buying process. He went over how they work, why they work, what they use, what he uses to make them, what I need to get to run one, blah blah blah and so on. I'd be willing to bet noone else would take that time with their customers. I'm not advertising for him or anything like that but I was impressed and always appreciate good service like that.

I agree with samper. Buckeye field supply took the time to call me and walk me through the set up. And the prices are the cheapest I could find.

I had to get some plumbing for the water stop so this pic is before I hooked up the water. From left...Prefilter...Pump...RO unit w/micron and 2 carbon blocks...dual stage DI.

The prefilter really helps extend the life of the system and protects the pump. The purpose of the pump is to boost the water presuure to increase efficiency of the unit so there is less waste water. You also maximize you gpd rates! If you add a prefilter and pump to your unit you will see dramatic improvements!!!

You can call the Filter Guys if you have technical questions. They will answer anything!

Let's start with a description of your setup - how many gallons in the entire system?

Is that a permeate pump for after the RO membrane or a booster pump before??

In this case he's talking about a booster pump before the membrane. a permeate pump will also help by releaving back pressure on the membrane. The backpressure typically occurs when you have the RO system feeding a pressurized storage tank.

For the home use.....is a storage tank really a big deal, really supply a decent flow for the 3 gallons it holds, or just skip it?? I am planning on a 75GPD unit. I really will only be using the portion after the RO to supply drinking and cooking water...while the DI will provide aquarium water. So is the flow w/o the tank really going to be to slow in all practicallity for this w/o a tank?

Any thoughts. If I should get the tank how important is a permeate pump then?

Thanks,

Yes - for all practical purposes, the flow of purified RO water (aka "permeate") is too slow for things like filling a drinking water glass or filling a pitcher for iced tea - even from a 100 gpd system. The pressure tank really does make quite a difference.

Remember that you should have a check valve so that you don't get this higher-flow water coming back through the DI resin - it should go only to a faucet or some similar outlet - not through the DI.
