Will this work.
I am going to build a sump for my 55 and was wondering if I removed the media from my current canister filter except for carbon and phosban if needed, could I use the canister filter for the return pump back to the display tank the rating on the canister is 340 GPH which should be about right for a 20-30 gallon sump correct?? Anyone know if this will work. I don't want to have to buy another pump if I can at all keep from it also the canister filter is only about 3 months old so I would hate to waste it.

Most pumps are rated a 0' head pressure. If your canister is located below your tank, (I'm guessing around the sump) then you will likely have 2 - 3 feet of head pressure which in turn will reduce the GPH significantly. You don't say what you have in your 55. The turn over rate would vary somewhat, depending on what you are keeping. A general rule of thumb (I hate general rules
) is to have 6 - 10 times the turn over rate as your tank, i.e 330 - 550 gph. Bottom line . . . IMO I would opt for another pump. |

Agreed, the pump for the canister filter is way too small. I'd say go with a larger pump. A Mag would be a great fit. I personally use QuietOnes.

Hi sandwhiston,
![]() I agree with the other posts here. You can get Mag Drive pumps (say a Mag 7 or Mag 9.5) for a decent price and they are excellent pumps. |
