getting started
i have a 55 gal tank i want to do a fish only tank what kinda filters would be the best for my application

I have seen 'fish only' tanks running on just canister filters but I would not recommend it. IMO, live rock is the best way to go. I would definately recommend a protien skimmer as well. Protien skimmers are like politics and religon, everyone has an opinion and think theirs is the best. I personally went through 4 skimmers before settling on my current one (click on my link below for a list of my equiptment). You may want to consider a UV Sterilizer as well. They are pretty effective for controlling and eradication of bacteria and protozoa (ich). Good luck.
