Question with HOT Skimmer?
Hey guys,I have had my tank(46 bow) set up for like 3 days. It only has 10 pounds of Live Rock.I plan to add about 50 lbs more, but im sort of running a test to see if there will be any copper leeching from the glass(used tank and previous owner used it for freshwater and treated with copper based meds)
Anyways I guess I blew my money and bought a ViaAqua multi-skimmer II, im wondering if anyone knows how it is supposed to work. The reason I ask is because I can see a Layer of film on the top of my water.(The instructions and the web site is of little help to say the least) Isn't my skimmer supossed to take care of this? When that film gets close to the skimmer should I see the skimmer suck it in,because the film just passes on through with out doing anything. The fist two days the collection cup had like an off white foam going straight up and touching the collection cup lid,but now the bubbles dont even reach the cup. I believe the live rock i got was either fully cured or partialy cured.Im a newbie obviously so im not sure. If nothing is happening with the foam because its so new thats fine but im just thinking that if there is a film on top then there should be foam? If you guys could help me with this that be sweet! P.S. I plan on buying a Bak Pak 2R to replace this thing when I get the money(2 months or so)It has to be HOT cause tanks not drilled. Thanks so much, Ryan |

That skimmer isn't going to do much for your tank as you have already noted. It should be foaming and removing waste, but it doesn't sound like it is. If you go for a Bak Pak, make sure to get the Prefilter/Surface Skimmer to remove the film you are seeing. In the meantime, the best you can do is aim a powerhead towards the surface to break it up.

Thanks Scott,
I have 2 Maxi jet 1200's in there. They are both about 3" above my sand bed on oppisite sides of the tank. They are both pointed towards the front middle of the tank, but pointed straight up towards the surface. As it is right now that puts about 2-8"x8" "holes" in the film.In saying that do you think I should may be change location of the powerheads? Do you recommend a certain skimmer for my tank? I plan on making it a reef tank in do time, with maybe 3-4 fish, inverts, some lps corals and hopefully an anemone of some kind down the road. Thank alot, Ryan |
