    Advise for a new Skimmer

    Hello all,

I hoping you guys can help me out. I was wondering what is the Best and quietest HOT skimmer for my 46 gal reef tank

(right now I have a ViaAqua Multi-SkimmerII) It has a Variable Venturi that makes the bubbles its kind of loud(imagine a constant sshhhhhhh 24/7).

Are these louder than other types of skimmers or are they all about the same?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

I think the best choice for a HOT skimmer, for all around performance, is the AquaC Remora Pro.

I would agree with Reefland. I had one on my 55 which did a great job and it was very quiet. I have it laying around here somewhere after taking down my 55, and need to put it up for sale. If your interested, contact me after the holidays.

If you can find a good condition used one there is no reason not to.

I have been lookin into skimmers ass well. I have a 75 and am currently using a prism deluxe. I am happy w the prism and it is quiet and I like the media basket, but am upgrading my 46 so I thought I'd move my prism down and upgrade my 75. I have heard nothing but good stuff about the remora, but it is aroun $180ish and only rated for a 60. the next step up is like $220. the prism pro is around $180 and rated at 300gal. then there is the octopus rated at 75 but looks just like the dual backpack setup and is only $120. I'm leaning towards that one... any opinions on the octo yet? what about my second choice - the prism pro?

I have no opinions on the octopus, but the ASM's are nice so...As for the prism, it is over-rated.

I was over on the dark side and did a search on skimmers and found a few good reviews on the octopus from people comparing them to remora. Quite a bit cheaper - wich makes me nervous. Looks like the same design though. I've notice not many people have nice things to say about the prism, perhaps I will listen to that trend. thanks again

Rob manes a nice product, I wouldn't hesitate to try the Octopus out if I had a system that was in need.

    Ryan,

I won't be home until after Xmas, but when I get there I'll look up the receipt on it. I know it is less than a year old. My 55 was a FOWLR (2 Lionfish). Health reasons (heart attacks) have basicly put me down to one tank so I gave up the Lionfish and stayed with my 75 reef.

Ive been looking around and see there are the one with Maxi-Jet 12oo's and one with a Mag 3 pump.

I know which is better but will the Maxi jet be ok for my 46?
Either way im going to get the filter box upgrade.

Do you know what pump is on there Richard, and do you remember if it has the surface filter box?

    Thanks again,
    Ryan

I know I'm jumping in a little late... I've heard great things about the AquaC Remora Pros as well. Right now, there are some really cheap, new (factory second) CPR BakPaks on e-Bay. It's the same seller I got my BakPak from, and he was a good seller w/ me (not that I'm sitting here collecting a buck from him or anything)- just another option to think about. Merry Christmas!

Mine has the maxi 1200. No surface box. Not sure why it would make a difference if it was on a reef or FOWLR??????????

Thanks Richard,I know it was probally a dumb question

Scott do you think it would make a difference if i wanted to use this skimmer on a reef tank?
Im a newbie but,I was just worried about what kind of medications you might have put in your tank(copper based).I also know that you would most likely have to turn your skimmer off for those kinds of meds.I just dont want to hurt my inverts, thats all.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

The skimmer doesn't keep me awake, even when I sleep on the couch- about 6 ft away from the tank. It isn't silent, but I wouldn't describe it as loud, either. I'd describe it as background noise.

Some day you'll be "sleeping with the fish[es]"?
