overflow box
I am currently working on an overflow box for my tank. My dad is a machinist and I was thinking about having him make me one out of food grade stainless steel. Would this work? Also what type of paint is safe to use inside of the aquarium? This will be an internal overflow box.

Not sure whether food grade SS would work or not. Why not make it out of black acrylic? That would solve your paint question as well. I would not paint the inside of an aquarium. I think you would be asking for a bunch of trouble. I have painted the back of my tank on the outside with appliance paint that works good.
