Cracked glass

Recently a customer of mine gave me an aquarium which the bottom had cracked and flooded their house. It measures 2' X6' and is 30" in height. the glass is 5/8 thick and the whole aguarium has been siliconed togeter.
Is it fixable? If so best way to fix it? How many gallons does is it hold?

Hi otis,

That's what is called a 225-gallon aquarium. It doesn't really hold that much water but they name the tanks based on their exterior dimensions without allowing for the thickness of the glass, etc. This is sort of like measuring the exterior dimensions of a house and claiming that as the interior living space.

The bottom glass can be replaced and a new bottom siliconed in place. I don't think I would attempt anything like that on my own. In fact, I doubt that I would even consider having it done because there would always be the idea in the back of my head that it might come apart a couple of years down the road after I had spent thousands of dollars on the tank's inhabitants.

You could even have the entire tank disassembled and resiliconed, but I have no idea how much that would cost or whether it would be worthwhile.

....Long story short....I popped the back panel in this 72gal after installing external overflows because I had forgotton to grind smooth one of the over-flow slots.I was distracted by a Young blond thing sitting in my tank room @2:00am

While fixing this screwup.......I popped the tempered bottom panel with my grinder

So I concreted them both;)I think it has been a year and a half,up and running
