Fresh Beginner
I have been a fresh water enthusiest for the past 5 years and recently made a big move and want to start all over go salt water. My problem is, I have no clue what to equipe my 75 gal. tank with. I know that i do want to go live rock. What fish species do well with live rock and how do they get along with one another? I welcome all advice.

Hello Jon, Welcome to the forums!!!! The first thing you have to look at is the tank it's self. If you've ever used anything with copper in it at all, you may want to think about starting over totally or you may have problems with inverts look for the post about copper on here. Also, a few things to get you started. One of the biggest rules I've learned when it comes to saltwater, if something as equipment says it's GOOD for 200 gals, it's really only GREAT for 100gal. So double everything. not suppliments, I just use that rule for equip.
1. USE RO water. Look into a RO/DI they are not too expensive and will save you in the end. 2. Get a good skimmer, do a search for skimmer there are a lot of really good ones out there. I personally run a Octopus Skimmer it's great. 3. Use about 1lbs of live rock per Gallon. 4. READ READ READ and oh yeah READ. Good luck pal, Ask any questions you have, also look at some of the 1000's of post on the site, there is some really great info. Last edited by tray262; 01-10-2007 at 04:41 PM. |

6. You can not have everything you want in one tank 7. Buy quality up front or you will replace in a short time spending more in the long run I use 1 1/2- 2 lbs per gallon of both rock and sand for substrate, crushed coral can cause issues in the long run unless you clean it all on a regular basis. With the right amount of live rock and sand stay away from sump, cannister etc. filters, all you will need is a GOOD skimmer and a refugium is always a good idea, it adds water volume and a place for "critters" to safely breed. |
