Hi Temp

I am still in the build stages of a 90gal salt for reef tank, and have put in two Velocity T4 for return for sump to tank. I used them for a couple of reasons:
1. they are very quiet, possibly quietest available
2. space available in my cabinet is limited and I was able to fit them in perfectly.
The problem is I didn't hear about their heat transfer issues until after I put them into the setup. With just them running the wt increases 6.5 degrees, turning on the AG3 skimmer adds 2.5. So that's about 9 degrees over ambient, if the room is 76 the water is 85 which is cooking.
Ok, I need to know of a pump I can use for return that not too awful big or loud. I don't really want to add a chiller because of space, it's kind of a small room. Lighting is not that much of a temp. concern because I have a Solaris LED. Any retun pump sugestions, in the 2,000gph range?

um i would go out a buy one or two fas to wait if it has a closed top on the thank it will work one fan to suck out the hot air and one to blow cool air in . you could try to do the same on the sump if you dont have a closed top .

yeah the fans are certainly possible and may be the solution, but I'd like to get the best working setup with the least amount of extra equipment for temp control and noise. the fans on my lights are loud enough. hate to drain tank again but since all that is in it is sand/water iI can. how do closed loops work anyway, I mean intake and return?

I have a similar situation. I have a return pump(Cap 2200, i think) somewhere in the range of 800GPH and an in sump skimmer pump around the same. The lighting is 2 x 250W Mh's which all pump the temperature up to about 82-83 degrees. I just got a digital thermometer to check highs and lows, but the heater is set on 76 degrees. My house is on the cool side too. I'm certainly going to need a chiller soon.

My question is what would be the quietest pump around 1800GPH to run the skimmer, external I guess so I don't have the heat problems and what would be a good internal pump around 1200GPH for the return that will not cause these heat problems? All this goes in the living room and the wife already hates the noise as is, more would creat major problems.

yes, a pump with fans. that what caused my heat, those nice quiet T4's don't have the fans and are water cooled and transfer their heat to the water. I'm between buying a chiller and keeping the T4's or replacing the T4's with a Reef flo dart pump. anyone got chiller advice, experience?

I looked into the Reef Flo Dart, but I was told they are not pressure pumps and would not be appropriate for the MR-2 skimmer. Also the volume is too high. I would prefer an "outside" pump, as it will definately not increase the temp of the tank, but noise is a huge concern. Can anyone recommend a pump around 1800GPH that is VERY quiet???

My next alternative is to mount a shelf on the wall in the basement and put 2 pumps 2 foot below the sump on the shelf and pump the water from the sump to the skimmer and back, and to pump from the sump through the pump and up to the display tank. I would probably also put a chiller down there as well.
