how to make an overflow?

can any1 explain or have diagrams on making an overflow box for a sump

Hi felix5747,

I would strongly recommend purchasing a commercially made one. It is critical that these devices operate flawlessly to prevent an overflow, and for the cost of $60-$100, it is worth the investment for the peace of mind.

If you are bound and determined to make your own, I think this guy sells them, but he also has DIY plans on his web site.

I had orginally made one from breeder boxes and a U-tube. Although it worked well for a while there where some problems with it..... 1st was algae that would accumulate in the tube reducing the water flow which in turn would raise the water level in the tank. 2nd is getting the siphon started, I would need to insert a piece airline into the tube and make multiple attempts to get it going right. 3rd, a U-tube only allows for a minimal ammount of water flow. Eventually it wasn't even enough for my 25 gallon reef. My fix was to purchase a CPR overflow box and the suction pump. As I mentioned in another thread if i was starting over agian a tank with an internal overflow would be my choice.....
