I've got a question, I'm sure they have them....Do they make things so you can use a sump without drilling your tank for the water inlet? And if so does anyone have a picture or a link with a setup guide so I can poke around and learn?

Hi LGR,
Sure, they are typically called overflow boxes. They do not come without risk, however most of the major brands are safe to use. Lifereef and CPR make some of the more widely used models.
solid thanks, I've seen overflow boxes and thought about using them, but wasn't sure.
There is a chance on them overflowing though, although most people have never had problems with them.
isn't there a way to cut off the overflow box if the sump overflows or the pump shuts off?
The overflow box will stop draining water automatically if the pump shut's off. However the problem lies with the overflow not restarting when the pump restarts. Again, I am not trying to steer you away from using on, as the popular manufacturers have continuous siphon overflows (will automatically restart), but I would stay clear of any lost cost e-bay option.
Currently I use a CPR brand overflow on my little 25 gallon reef. To help ensure the siphon will remain as well as restart in the event of a power outage use the suction pump with it. Another possibility of the tank overflowing would be that the intake screen for the box clogs with algae etc. Especially if you are pushing the flow capacity of the box to its max.... Although it is a fairly reliable set up, given the option to start again I would opt for a built in overflow. This reduces maintenance and the chance for a wet floor......
