Nano Cubes
i was interested in purchasing about a 8-12 gallon nano cube and i was wondering if anyone had any advice on what brand or type of cube to purchase? i was looking at the JB 12 gallon deluxe for about 200$. Are these tanks as hard to manage as everyone says they are?

Re: Nano Cubes
I don't find mine particularly hard to manage, but I also don't use the completely covered top. I wouldn't try any sensitive animals though and I find the limitations at 12 gallons are much greater than I had initially perceived them to be. At $200 you are overpaying for that tank at least from prices I have seen. I only paid a little more for mine with halide lighting. CurrentUSA AquaPod 12 Gallon 70w HQI Aquarium: Premium Aquatics They also offer the 24g with 150w halide for $300, which I wish I had gone for.
If I were to do it all over again I would simply buy a 29 gallon tank and a seperate light. It would have cost less and been a lot larger. A 10 gallon tank, PC lighting, and the pumps would cost you less than $75. The nano cubes look nice, but in my opinion you are paying for hype more than anything else. If you absolutely love the look of the nanocubes then buy one, but if you just want a smaller sized tank I'd say buy a normal tank and put it together yourself. Re: Nano Cubes
to answer your question about manageability...
i had a 20g nano and found it to be too time consuming to manage on its own. especially if you have it stocked full of calcium loving corals. i had to run a sump on it. mine was only a 10g sump, but i could have used a larger one. you will need a topoff system plain and simple. if you get a 8g tank, you will have to top that thing off all the time. forget it for 1 day and your salinity will rise considerably. calcium and alk. balance can be trickier with small tanks too. i'm not trying to disuade you from getting a small tank, but just realize that it is twice the "work" (or tinkering) of a larger system. that is what i found to be true with mine. |
