    Help With ORP Probe

I recently purchased a Red Sea Aquazone Plus 200 ozone generator. The unit comes with a ORP controller and probe. The problem is I've had the probe in for 7 days now and still my ORP is reading 0.00. I called Red Sea, and they told me this is normal, thus it may take a week before the probe starts to give a reading. Does anyone have one of these units? Is this normal? I'm getting a bit impateint with this thing.

Oh yeh, I guess I should mention, yes I did take the black cap off the end of the probe, and rinsed with RO water like the instructions stated to do.

    Re: Help With ORP Probe

Called Red Sea today, they are kindly sending another probe. Funny thing is, I put the probe in RO water, and I get a reading around 148 v, but when I put the probe back into the tank, goes right back to 0.00 v. Can't figure this one out. I know my tank must have some redox potential.

    Re: Help With ORP Probe

Follow-up on bad probe. The suspected bad probe really wasn't bad at all. It started reading after almost two weeks of being in the tank. Thats some break-in period The good folks at Red Sea did send me a new probe, and I'll keep it as a back up. After doing some research on the use of ozone I'm starting to wonder if it was worth the $$$ invested We shall see.

ozone is worth it! I love mine. I've never seen a 2 week break in period though!

Hey how many hours a day do you run your ozone reactor? I'm setting up a 50 ozonizer on my 34 gallon solana but I'm not sure how long I should run it.

    Thanks Del

    Re: Help With ORP Probe

You won't want much with only a 34g tank. I would take some tank water (a known amount - 2 or 3 gallons) and put it in a 5g bucket, noting the colour. Then, inject ozone into the bucket and time how long it takes for the water to become clear. Take that time and multiply by the tank volume. You now have the time of ozone it will take to clear your tank. I would run it no more than that every so often (week/bi-weekly).

Thanks for the reply. So after it clears let say 30min then the ozonizer needs to turn off. Correct? And at the time measure with orp monitor and turn on accordily right?

    Thanks

    Re: Help With ORP Probe

As long as you keep don't go any higher than 450 on your REDOX your fine, you can run it all the time. The issue is if ozone escapes into the room, it can make you sick as ozone is toxic at high levels. Be sure to have activated carbon on the dry and wet side to ensure that all the ozone is taken up.

How are you injecting ozone into your aquarium? Typically, most people inject the ozone into their protein skimmer.

It's best to run your Ozone generator with an Orp Controller so that the generation of ozone can be automated and will disengage when it reaches a maximum of ORP of 450.

Also, the ORP Probe is highly sensitive to electical interference so its advisable that you keep it clear of pumps, heaters, or other components that might produce electromagnetic interferece otherwise you stand the chance of having false readings.

I agree with what's stated above regarding your 34g tank in that you can easily overdose ozone if you use your generator at 100% setting. Ozone above 500 ORP for an extended period of time will render your tank lifeless and may leak into your room causing health issues for you an dyour family since ozone is a sterilizer.
