No I have no tried a filter like that, mainly because it isn't needed. Filtration for a saltwater aquarium can be as simple as liverock and a protein skimmer.

I have one that I used in a 40 gallon hex fish only tank for years. I only had one huge piece of fiberglass coral for decoration so so no room for any LR. The thing worked great and was extreamly silent. That tank is long gone and I just use LR , sand & a skimmer in my 90 now. But in the right circumstance, that filter will work. Eheim is a top quality brand.
