hang-on-tank overflow skimmers
I just purchased a 110 gallon Reef tank with a 40 gallon Sump. I have concerns about power outages. I understand I can drill the return side.. what about the hang-on-tank overflow skimmer.. There are two tubes that come from the tank to the overflow box.. seems to me if the power goes out.. those tubes will keep going untill the water drops about 3 inches. What can I do about those tubes?

![]() Have you got a pic? If you have a sump, why don't we just look for another skimmer that is probably going to do a better job. JMO |

Re: hang-on-tank overflow skimmers
Mark,
Welcome to Reefland........The overflow should shut down when the level drops..Have you tried shutting down the return pump to see what happens? |

Re: hang-on-tank overflow skimmers
The water level will drop to the lowest level of the internal box and the tubes will stop siphoning. Then when the power is restarted, they should restart siphoning.

Re: hang-on-tank overflow skimmers
Thanks for the replies.. After looking at it some more lastnight I see how when the water level drops about an inch the skimmer won't be able to get water in it. So the 40g sump should be able to hold what water may come out of the tank. I plan to shut the system off and see what happens this afternoon.

Re: hang-on-tank overflow skimmers
The sump should hold it fine...as long as your operating level for the sump isn't at the rim.
