The best thing for your tank would be to disconnect the canister filter and hook up a sump and refugium. I don't use canister filters and I'd venture to say that there aren't many...if any here using them on their reefs.

I agree. Any filter media in them will require very frequent cleanings and for the value you might get from one, I don't think it is worth it. If you wanted to run some carbon in it, and replace it very often (weekly), that would be my only suggestion.

Well I plan on doing so, but the the tank i have going now is just kinda of a starter tank i would say, just to get the feel of the does and dont, here soon im buying a 120gal tank, and in going to have everthing i would need for that tank before i even put water in it, sump, skimmer, etc.... I just wanted somthing small just to learn, cause i would rather crash a 55 gal tank then a 120gal..

Since you are going to use the Canister filter use ceramic. Just keep an eye on the NO3's. You can get a nice unwanted spike if you don't stay on top of it. Starting off it will be fine. But as you work your way to the 120 they become a thing of the past. You can still use it to run carbon and PO4 romover through the canister filter. I use on @ every two weeks to run carbon. Keep us informed.

One of the problems with the "starter tank" concept is, the use of a smaller (and therefore less stable) water volume and inexpensive (and therefore generally less effective) equipment makes it much more likely that you will have problems and be turned off of the hobby. Most people would be much better served by setting up a system that is "keeper" quality that you will either retain as a FOWLR (or for any animals that you like but may not be compatible with what you want in your "main" system), while the new system is reef, or sell it off as a whole system to help finance your new setup. Unfortunately, this is one hobby where getting into it on the cheap (unless maybe you buy used) is usually a recipe for disaster.
