Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Rocky I've been wanting some of these for a while. For the price and the way they move water I don't think they will be that bad of a buy.
You may want to read this thread. I just found it and haven't read it entirely yet but here ya go. Reef Central Online Community - Hydor Koralia Super-Mod

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Just a foot note: I have had better luck with the the Korilia's over the Tunze Nano streams. I enjoy the easy startup and mounting head as for the Nanos the mounting system is below par and the impeller has broken three times in just under a year.
We have many Korilias on our systems and enjoy them very much. we have them on the a controller and they work just fine for almost 6 months so far. JMO.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
The opening to the housing looks huge though. How do you keep snails out of them?

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
I agree. They send you a Reducer that covers the wide draft holes and a guard for the front. You can use it with or without. I have a ton of snails and luckly haven't sucked any up. But a Rose bubble is another question.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Thanx Zoa and Chuck
![]() You 2 have hit on some of the concerns I have 1. Using a controller for the koralias. Zoa which controller are you using? I have heard that there are problems with the controllers unless you use the Seio controllers or a controller that doesnt turn the koralia totally off, just ramps the amps down to a minimum. 2. The large opening. Here again, I have read that they fixed this in a newer batch that is supposedly out already...Sure would love to see some pics of new versus old if this is the case.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
I bought 2 of the model 4's today. I really like them, very good flow and pretty small in size I think they only use something like 12 watts. I am probably going to get a model three also.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
I have 2 of them. Been using them for about 3 weeks now. No problems at all, so far. Just need to get used the power of these heads and how much water they move.
Think you will all like them. Jim

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
I have two of model 4's that I have put in my 90gal. One I have the guard on I put it one to more direct the flow the other with out. The snails crawl on them with out any problem. I saw one get to far out over the output and get blown off. The best price I have found is from here #1 Big Al's Aquarium Supplies: Tropical Fish Tanks, Fish Supplies, Stands, Decorations, Backgrounds, Lighting, Filters Even with shipping it was cheaper than other places I have found.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Rocky,
I received the Koralia model 4s today. As you may have read the construction of them is simple and they are somewhat cheaply made compared to the tunze pumps. Side by side with a Seio 820 I can see a bunch of advantages to the Koralia. First they come stock with magnets that actually hold very well on my 75 AGA. The way the magnets attach allow for many more aiming options compared to a Seio or Maxijet. The flow pattern is broad like a seio and the water is pushed all the way across the display without a problem. Running side by side with a Seio I'd take the koralia any day. The seio feels like it's pushing more water right out of the pump but looking at particles moving around it doesn't. The seio flow seems to die out half way across the display and the Koralia doesn't. I'm comparing an 820 to the model 4 though. The new models that I got came with the snail guards. They are simple to assemble and there is no way most snail species could get inside. Cleaning them will be very easy and the intake can't clog up like the MJ or Seio...there is no way. I've attached pictures. One of them is a breakdown of the pump that the manufacturer sent. The others are next to a Seio 820 for you to compare the size and stock attachments. The koralia is bigger but I like it. We'll see how they hold up long term. Oh yeah TURTLE POWER!

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Sweet pics....Thanx Chuck!
So you think these magnets that the koralia's have will have any problem holding on a tank that has 1/2" glass chuck? Also another thing I was thinking about is seam/seals for the internal magnet....anyone who has owned a magnet for any real length of time knows that if its not sealed properly then it will leach/rust these powerheads are fairly new so I dont know if anyone has had theirs long enough to see if that is an issue.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
The glass on my tank is 1/2 they do not hold very well. The magnets seem to be sealed very well I dont think that them rusting will be a issue, only time will tell. I knocked one of the outside magnets off the other day when I was moving some things and the powerhead held it self in place with just the force of the water it was putting out. So then I had to play to play with changing the angles to see if it would hold it self in place. No matter what angle I had it in it would hold itself in place without the outside magnet as long as the power head was running.

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
I'm gonna agree with zen on them staying put pretty well. I've removed the magnet from each of mine and they are staying...have been for about 4 minutes and counting. The internal side has a rubber piece that forms a nice suction to the glass. The pump pushing water forces it back and slightly compresses the rubber and the magnet pulls it further in. It's not a suction cup.....but most likely in time not work as well as it does brand new. I don't know about thicker glass. On mine they hold extremely well but it's not as tight as the Seio magnets hold.....those will break a finger or glass if you mess up. The magnets on the impeller may have problems in time but we'll see. Heck the entire pump might quit in a month but I'll keep you updated if you remind me.
BTW 14 minutes and holding...

Re: Hydor Koralia powerheads
Now I started to see how many mods there are for MJ's and I was just about to order some koralias too.....Anyone tried the sureflo1600 Mod for MJ? Also supposedly if you take an impeller from a MJ which is bigger and put it in a Koralia you drastically increase the volume moved at minimal wattage according to the link chuck supplied above. I think Im just gonna order a wavestrip so I can put a couple of MJ1200's w/the sureflo 1600 mods on them and then also get a couple of the HK#4's that way I can compare these side to side. The HK's will be later on down the road...I can get more flow and on a wavestrip for less...so I opted for the MJ's first off. Wow never realized there would be so much info into powerheads!
