Re: Maxi-jet mods

Charlie,
I have a couple of the older MJ mods that I mounted to Sea Swirls. I also have a Tunze that's rated around 1600 gph...These MJ mods are smaller and put out just as much GPH as the Tunze..Just as reliable and a lot cheaper. I like em,

Don

This is all I've ever read about softstart. This is a description of it given on the reefkeeper 2 pages.

"Softstart is a much debated issue in the aquarium community; many argue about whether or not it even exists. The reality is that both camps are right in some way. Softstart does exist, however, it isn’t practical or cost- effective to implement perfectly. Digital Aquatics does implement “softer-start” for all channels. This is done to reduce the “clanking” of the impeller when a powerhead is turned on. Put Digital Aquatics to the test! The way to judge a product’s softstart capability is to listen to the pump when it turns on; there is always some clanking, but the goal is to reduce it as much as possible. Digital Aquatics tested many other products and has implemented what it feels is the best performing softstart available. Also, powerhead design is improving over time and pumps like the MaxiJet brand last much longer than some others. "

In it they say "we implement softer start" but don't give any hz readings.

Is that the tunze nano? I was looking at that too. I like the fact that the flow is not laminar with the Tunze. I have also heard that the Koralia is not as laminar as a regular maxijet.
They are selling a MJ mod at Marine Depot and Premium aquatics for about 20 bucks.

Re: Maxi-jet mods

If someone can devise an experiment for me to do showing the flow pattern I'll try it.

I dont think it would be the best way to show flow pattern, but it might help a little. My thoughts is to use some type of syringe/turkey baster and squirt water w/ food coloring into the middle of the jet stream of the MJ and this will show the dispersment of the coloring. I would definately make this a movie though not pics. Does your camera do movie mode Chuck?
