Hello Fishkeepers's.
I am Getting a 48x24x24 Tank very soon, and i want to keep Fish/reef. Can you advise me on something! If i have a Sump,is there a way that I can run it with out having to have my tank drilled , I would like to run my tank on live rock for my Biological Filtration, with internal pumps to move the water around the tank. i will have the tank drilled if i have to but i would rather not if i can get away with it, any advice would be welcome thank you...

You can purchase hang-on overflows that will fit most tanks. They run $80-200 depending on the size, and work rather well. The only problem being is you have this large box hanging on the back of your tank .. which you may or may not have otherwise.
I've always used the hang-on overflows, and they work rather well in my opinion, and I don't think they detract from the look of the tank anymore than a powerhead does. If you keep your bioload lower, you can run your tank without a sump just fine. But you'll soon find you wish you had one to hide your heater in, and all of your other hardware. My 29gal tank just has two outlets from the sump-return pumps, and the overflow in the tank. Everything else is hidden in the sump. It makes for a much cleaner looking tank. If you are new to keeping a marine tank, I would spend some time reading and making sure you understand the mechanics before setting up the sump or you can end up with a mighty fine mess. Hope this helps, Wes |

Thank you guy's,
eses, can you tell me where do you have the holes in your main tank, I have been doing a lot of reading , I always do when I want to do something new! my sump will be 24x15x12. when I get my new tank I have been told that it will be drilled if I want it to be, but I would have to tell them where I want the hole/holes to be done. what do you think I should tell them ?

Welcome to Reefland!
I think eses is referring to HANGON overflows...and when you talk about drilling your tank then you are referring to a Different type of overflow (called a standpipe) Here is a link to Durso Overflow design that most ppl use nowadays...I have it on my 90gal and its flawless IMO And as far as where you would drill the tank....you will want to build your Overflow standpipe FIRST then take the overflow to the person who is gonna drill the tank, and show them where you want the overflow(s) that way you know you have enough clearance....you should understand a little bit more from this site ![]() http://www.rl180reef.com/pages/standpipe/standpipe.htm
