Oceans Motions getting clogged?

Well, I have been reading some posts about people having issues with their Oceans Motions clogging up. I also have personal experience with the issue. After setting up a guys 540 gallon system his OM wasn't switching. The problem: sand was getting caught in between the casing and the drum. Here is my suggestion, install a strainer basket prior to the intake pump for the OM. Although I have not yet tried it seems plausable. What do you think? Sequence 1.5 inch Inlet Strainer Basket (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Water Pumps > External > Accessories )

Makes sense to me, but then again, I've never run them (at least not yet), so I can't be positive. However, I would imagine that type of strainer should capture the sand prior to entering :-)

To go the other way here, is there way to move the intake to prevent it from picking up the sand in the first place?

Yeah Charlie, keep the intake about 8 inches above the sand or better. But there is always a fish that stirs up the sand bed or when you mess with the tank etc.... The guy who is having problems has a blue spotted ray that stirs up the sand regularly as he lies to bury himself.... I am going to add the strainer as a precaution. I believe it will help maitain the seals also....

Merry X-mass!

Re: Oceans Motions getting clogged?

Yeah, in that case, a strainer looks to be the answer Greg. Make sure to give us an update or 2 when you get it installed, would you?

Merry Christmas back at ya!!!!!
