I am setting up a new sump for a 75 gal, just wondering what pump brand everyone feels is the best. I have looked at quite one, Mag 7&9 , Ca2200.
Just need to know what everone feels is the better pump

The other brand I was considering is RIO, I have that on my skimmer right now and am very pleased

I've been using a mag 18 on two 75 gallons for a while now. The first has been in operation for 3 years without a problem and the second has been running around a year. If I use an internal pump a mag is always my first choice.

What style pump do you need? It sounds like you need a submersable. Do you have the option of an external? For internal I am currently using a Mag 7 on my 25 gallon so I would go larger for your 75 provided you have a large enough overflow to handle the volume. For external I have some Reflo pumps. They are very quiet.

If you go external, I have always had good results out of Little Giant. In fact I have a new 4-MDQX-SC waiting to go on my 75 as soon as I start the build.

I am going internal, and if I go Mag, it will have to be the 8.5 I thinik because of the volume

I want a bigger pump for my 25 but then I will need to replace my overflow. *shrug*

I've had a mag as a return pump (7), did not like it due to noise. I know, I'm about to get blasted from a lot of folks, but they are noisy and suck a lot of power for what they do.

My suggestion is to set up your sump for an external pump. Take a look at Pan World. Basically, you are getting an Iwaki at a cheaper price. One of the Chief engineers left Iwaki and started his own business. The same pump with the added bonus of a power cord. They are quiet and can really pump the water.

For your setup, take a look at the 50px. Not too bad a rating at all... Pan World Magnetic Water Pumps (PX & PS)

yes your thoughts are the same has mine, I am leaning away from Mag just for the reasons you state. I had not considered external, due to space issues. I am not sure that will be an option, I think it will have to be an internal in the sump

My mag 18 is quiet and even with all that flow I still have 7 powerheads in the display and it is also a 75 gallon. I'd like to run external as well but don't have the room on this system so internal it is. The 18 is pretty quiet in a closed stand but the 36 that I have is too loud so it's on standby mode. Every piece of my system sits on top of pieces of rubber treadmill mat. It keeps vibrations to a minimum.

Im using a mag7, only about a foot and half lift to my 90 gal. It works fine with my cpr over flow & aqua lifter pump.
