Filtration media

Hi I will be starting a new tank or rather a second hand 3ftx2ftx2ft.

I have all the basic euipment in place , however i wish to get some feedback on the filtration media. I have 2 options...

1) bioballs , bio-ring , i have 1 pails each which is just nice for my sump tank partition.

2) Liverocks + dead rocks, i have about 45kg of it. which is sufficient for my sump.

now the question is, if i use bio-balls / bio-rings will have to regiment myself in cleaning/washing them periodically.
some says liverocks will be less maintenance and its natural.

will i need to have lights on the liverock which will sits on my sump tank?

What is the pros / cons of each of the above 2 option?

appreciate any kind advice ....

Thanks for reading

Re: Filtration media

What do you plan to keep in the tank - fish, inverts, corals? That will affect the answer you get. My advice would be to use the rock and put it in the tank instead of the sump. The sump would be for water and equipment.

Hi Ratpack, I already have live rocks on my main tank.

Mostly. i will go with fish only setup. however i will consider some LPS for the tank as well.

Is it necessary to have lights on the liverocks if i put some of them on the sump tank?

I will post a pic of my display tank , please advise is the rock sufficient...

Thanks...
