Just posting up a little note on improving the performance of the CPR Bacpac. I have been putting it off forever, but yesterday I finally pulled off the venturi and replaced the pump. I ran airline tubing through the bio chamber and up into the riser chamber where I put two 3" limewood airstones. I powered these with a dual tetra air pump (might work better with a deep water pump, but it is only under 6" of water).
It was amazing. There were so many bubbles that I had to raise the collector cup about half an inch over the waters surface. With the venturi the collector needed to be under the surface to work. I will see how this works in the long run, but for first impression I would say that this is an upgrade that is worth doing. It also makes for much quieter operation of the skimmer, a definite plus since this tank is in the step parents living room. Just FYI, your mileage may vary
