ASM protein skimmer

Does anyone have experience with the ASM GS-1 protein skimmer? I was thinking about buying one but would like to hear from those who have used one or know of anyone that has. Also is there any sites like a consumer reports for things like protein skimmers or other fish related things?

Thanks

nate

Re: ASM protein skimmer

I have experience with two of G4 models and a G3. This particular skimmer functions very well but is cheaply made compared to a Euro Reef. I think they are a good choice if you are on a budget. If you decide to purchase one I would suggest that you don't ever tighten the top portion or the cup down onto the skimmer body. They become extremely difficult to get off if you do so and due to the way they are made you run the risk of cracking something. The skimmer will function the same if you just seat them without twisting.

Re: ASM protein skimmer

I have had the G3 on my 90 for abbout 6 months and have had no problems. I never owned a euroreef so I can't compare. It doesn't seem "cheap" to me and the cup has never gotten stuck on me. I empty about a 3/4 full cup of dark brown/green smelly skimate twice weekly. It's just now starting to slow down a bit so it's probably time I take it apart and clean the pump & mixing chamber. (normal maintenance I would say) The only down side I see is that it doesn't come with an output valve to control the water level. It has a tube that you slide up or down to maintain the level. There is an easy mod you can install for under $20. I have mine in the sump with a controlled level so I never have to adjust it once it is set up. All and all, for the price, I think it is a great skimmer.

Re: ASM protein skimmer

I have a G2 to which I added a gate valve mod to better control the water level. This works quite well. The only problem I have is that the air intake gets restricted/clogged in a matter of a few days. Shutting off the skimmer for a few minutes lets water get in there and dissolves the clog. I have been considering controlling the skimmer with my AquaController so that I can automatically shut it down every day, but I haven't gotten around to it.

I also did the recirculation mod, which is supposed to result in better bubble production, but I can't say whether it does so or not.

I had to replace the pump after a couple of years of use. The bushing on the end of the needle wheel got worn down and therefore did not line up right, but when I couldn't get it to run reliably by adding nylon washers to compensate, I replaced the whole pump.

I have had no problems with the cup removal. The cup just twist-locks, with an o-ring providing a seal. Has the design changed since I bought mine?

All in all, the GSM is a decent value for the money. When I see what people pay for Deltecs, Bubble Kings and other high-end skimmers, I am just floored. I can't imagine that the performance of these skimmers is 5x better than my GSM (which is about the cost differential).
