Help setup a sump.

Hi,
I am interested in building a sump for my 40 gallon (high), just wondering if someone could help me design the the sump? I would truly appreciate it, I am going to use the hang-on overflow (I am not going to take a chance and drill my tank on site or send it to get drilled, while my corals sit in a garbage can). I need a recommendation to either use a Rubbermaid container or a all glass aquarium. Any information you can supply would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi,
I may have a possible problem, my stand is 34 inches long, 24 inches high and only 10-3/4 inches wide, I think this may be a problem, please let me know.

Thanks,
Joe

I would use a aquarium instead of a rubbermaid due to the ease of installing the partitions in a tank. I also suggest that the partitions be made from glass. The reason being is glass is cheaper, can be cut by a glass company to your measurments and is stonger/

Hi jbjints!

Your right, a width of 10 3/4" can be a problem. I'm not familiar with the Rubbermaid tubs, but it would require a small glass tank to fit in the space. What are you looking for in the sump (i.e. internal skimmer, refugium)?

Some people choose to set a sump beside the tank in order to fit something that’s really functional. Of course to provide a clean look some cabinetry or something can be built around it. It's just really hard to get a sump/refugium under a tank as narrow.

Best of luck,
Scott

Reef,
I am looking for a internal skimmer, not to familiar with a refugium, my only option may be to have my tank custom made or maybe I will just have the glass cut and build it myself.
If you can possibly recommend the way the sump should be built via plans or a website I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe

Scott, cant you build Joe a custom sump even with his dimensions....Joe there are multiple board members here who have bought the sumps from Reefland and they have Excellent ratings! With the limited area you are working with this is an option to consider.

I just found this post of mine from a long, long time ago, is my stand going to give me a problem in building a 10 gallon sump for my tank? Will I have room for the sump?

Hey Joe,

If you'd like one built try Aquatica reef.com! The place is in my home town and this guy builds sumps---refugiums-----skimmers---tanks.
Check out their website.
