Does shape matter?

My sister read that the shape of a tank, can cause more nitrates and nitrites. Is that possible?

Re: Does shape matter?

The only way I can see that occurring is when you don't have the flow designed correctly. If it doesn't reach all the nooks and crannies, detritus will build up causing problems. JMHO

Re: Does shape matter?

Since most aquariums are rectangle in shape and not everyone has a problem with nitrites and nitrates. I would have to say its not the shape but obstructions IE Live rock you put in the tank to cause problems with your flow. Nitrites and nitrates are normally caused by decaying matter, unfiltered tap water or even nitrogen fixation(Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung 2005).

Re: Does shape matter?

The shape doesnt matter. It s the amount of flow you have from powerheads and there position for maximum effect.
Nitrates can be caused from many sources from low flow or over stocking or LR palcement or feeding habits or equipment used.

Nitrites are only seen in a cycling tank.

Re: Does shape matter?

Lance once again the information you are putting out on this forum is inaccurate. You have little understanding of the nitrogen cycle to say "Nitrites are only seen in a cycling tank." I would highly suggest you do some more reading before you make any other ridiculous posts here.

Nitrite and the Reef Aquarium by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com

In case you don't bother to read it here is something from that article.

"After some period of time (often a few weeks), the bacterial action begins to equilibrate, and neither ammonia nor nitrite is present in high concentrations. This doesn't mean that a lot of each is no longer being produced, only that they are consumed as fast as they are produced, leaving a low steady-state concentration. In most reef aquaria, the steady-state concentrations of both ammonia and nitrite are quite low (less than 0.1 ppm), and often are below the detection limits of many test kits."

Donice,

Please go back and re-read Samper's post. It is addressed to someone else.

Re: Does shape matter?

Donice I am very sorry and please don't feel that you can't post here. This is a forum dedicated to helping fellow hobbiests. You and any questions that you have are more than welcome. The problem comes when information is put out for others to follow that is not correct. There are plenty of other places to get bad info from and the moderators here strive to keep that junk out. I am no expert as this is a constant learning experience but a reply to your question was inaccurate and I didn't want you to take stock in it.
