finally bought a tank, what now???

i bought a 75 gallon acrylic with oak stand and canopy today. Im gonna do a 30 gal rubbermaid sump. I need your guys reccomendations on a good skimmer(my tank is gonna be fowlr), good return pump ect ect. thanks

Welcome to Reefland!

Well you need to decide wether you want the skimmer in the sump or to hang on the back (HOB) of the tank. If you are going with a FOWLR and you are positive you wont turn the tank into a REEF (this happens alot, ppl start with FOWLR and then turn into a reef) then you wont need as much of a skimmer.....I would recommend the Remora Pro by AquaC which is a HOB. Also your skimmer will be working hard at first if your LR is not cured and I would wait until your LR is totally cured before you start adding fish into the tank. HTH

I would guess that, as with everything, the most important question is how much you plan to spend. I have a Top Fathom skimmer that is working well and is a mid-range skimmer in price.

I'd also consider using a tank for a sump instaed of plastic. I'm glad I did since it allows me to look into the sump without having to stick my head into the aquarium stand.

I am running a super reef devil in sump skimmer on my 90 and it does a great job for $200. Return pumps I would go with some thing with arond 1200 gph. There several good pumps out there that are external and internal just stay away from RIO'S.

For your money, the turboflotor t1000 is the best bargain. Its like $150 with pump at marine depot. The turboflotor is a very simple and efficient skimmer. I've had mine running for 2 weeks and it pulls out black crap out every day. Also, you might want to consider a 30 long tank as a sump. I use one and it is so much easier to work with because you can see through it. Its only like $50 which is cheap by saltwater standards.

strangelove and chromis have it right use a glass or acrylic tank for a sump .im currently using a rubbermaid container as a sump and though it is functional, i wish i could see what is goig on in there theres a ton of life growfing on everything.also there was a thread awhile back about rubbermaid containers leaching chemicals in the water.rubbermaid confirms this and theres only certain plastics they use that are food-safe.im seeting up a new tank and im using glass for a sump ,and i even went out and spent 30 bucks on a "brute" garbage can to replace my 8 dollar roughneck,rubbermaid says the brute is safe the roughneck is not.hth
