Is there a reason to keep these cold or is room temperature storage OK? Thanks.

Hi 36,
I asked this same question a long long time ago because I got some Selcon and some Zoecon. I only remember that the majority of answers I got were "no" that the liquid foods do not need to be kept in the fridge.
I forgot why but maybe someone else could give some more detailed info.
Althought I got some DT's over the weekend and it says right on the package that it should be kept cold.

Im not for sure that they need to be refigerated but I keep my selcon in the fridge any way. DTS plankton does need to be refigerated to keep the culture alive for than a few weeks.

i remember one of my bottles of selcon getting a little "STANKY" toward the end of the bottle ,,have kept in frig' ever since ,,no problems since then,,,,keep my Lugol's and zooplankton and of course the DT'S in the door of the fridge anyway,,the Selcon and Garlic takes not that much more room anyway

A couple of years ago I asked American Marine if Selcon should be refrigerated. Their answer was no. I don't remember why but I don't keep it in the refrigerator anymore.

I'm going to have to disagree on this one. I'll follow the manufactures advice. It seems like the cooler temperature does something to the molecular structure of the Fatty acids. All I can say is I don't refregerate it anymore and I've never had it go bad.

just about two weeks ago i had to ask myself the same question about selcon,im getting to the end of the bottle and it seems like it is seperating to different layers and a little off color and stinky.i decided not to refrigerate it anyway and have still been using it ...i hope the manufacturer is right on this,but i have to assume they know more about it than we do

From a past post at Reefcentral:

Spoke with the folks at American Marine (Selcon Mfg) today and asked about the life span of their product. Once opened, he estimated a 9-12 month life span (based on this, I will probably toss out the bottle 9-12 months after purchase). Though refrigeration will not harm the product, he recommended against it as the ingredients may not go back into solution when shaken. They suggested a cool, dry ambient location for storage. When you notice black spots throughout the bottle, it has gone bad and should be tossed.

room temp. for these vitamins should be fine. You just want to avoid stressing these vitamins at high temperatures as this will enzymatically break down chemical bonds of the FA(fatty acids which will decrease the potency of the vitamins thus making them less effective.

Refrigerating it will eventually break down or change the chemical structure of the vitamins and whatnot. Which will then make it harder for those things to go back into solution which in turns renders them useless to any inhabitants in your tank.
