    Question on sump????????????

(Hi everyone Im new in town) Im a newbie when it comes to sumps..well kinda with everything....I have a 46g..bowfront and no sump..I've had this aquarium for lil over a year now..I'm looking to get a 125g...pre-drilled..and putting somewhere around 36 gallon sump on it, if thats what you would call it..I guess the overflow goes down and through the filter media and then to the skimmer and then to the return pump then to the aquarium..I am wanting to do a reef set up with fish too... with that in mind...I've read alot of threads and soaking information up, but I'm puzzled when I see people mentioning wet/dry...or sump..or refuguim....what is the difference? Plus what would be more applicable to me with the set up im wanting to do?....Any help would be much appreciated...Thanks

    Re: Question on sump????????????

A sump is a tank or container that the overflow drains into. It can have sections inside to place skimmer, heater, UV sterilizer, carbon or other filtration equipment.

Wet-Dry filters use bio-balls to trap large waste particles and create a biological filter, the problem with bio-balls is nitrate build-up over time.

A Refrigium is a sump like container that has macro algae and a separate light source to grow the algae and copepods to reduce phosphates and nitrates in your reef tank.

For a newbie it is best to start with a sump and good skimmer. I used wet-dry filters and removed the bio-balls, but eventually bought a sump for my 90 gallon reef tank.
