    Equipment and return water noise

Hey everyone I am new to the forum. I have a 72 gal saltwater tank I just got from a friend. Its a nice, established tank and looks amazing. The problem is that its a bit noisey. the tank drain to the sump (its an overflow type) is making a gurggling noise. is there anyway to fix this? the pump is a quite one 2200 581 gpm pump. is this too much for this tank? I just want to make it quiet, expense is not a problem and i am very hany as well. let me know what you think thanks!! I have tried the durso mod with a million configs of holes and no luck.

    WELCOME TO REEFLAND!

Equipment noise and noise from water returns, overflows, etc. is relevant to almost any type (reef, FO, FOWLR, etc.) marine system. I moved your post from the Fish Forum to the Equipment Forum where hopefully it may get more attention from those who have experienced this same frustration.

You might find that if you post for hellp in the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Forum, people there may have solved their similar problem through some other kind(s) of modification. Use a title that says exactly what it is you need help with.

    Good luck!

If the noise is coming from the drain and the plumbing underneath the drain, then I suspect that it might have something to do with the way your flexible hose under your drain sort of dips down and then rises up to enter the sump. Has it always been set up that way, even at the other's guy's?

If you had a ball valve beneath your drain, you could close it off a little until the noise stopped, but you don't. And you would still have to do something about that hose rising up to meet the top of the sump. I don't believe I have ever seen anything like that before. Ask the previous owner if he had it that way without noise problems.

thank you both for the welcomes and the responses. sorry i am VERY new to this saltwater thing. he had it like that but i only seen the tank once and do not remember if it had all that noise. So maybe if i get a length of hose thats appropriate then it will work. any suggestions for my setup? anything i need?? what type of fish would go well with ones i have? i have a lionfish (hes small), some sort of angelfish, a tomato clown and a corral beauty. as well a banded shrimp and some kind of striped one

Sorry your questions haven't been answered yet. I have been rather under the weather lately. Also, I hate to offer plumbing advice because of my limited experience with plumbing, most of which was acquired "fixing" problems.

Since you got this tank from a friend, have you asked him if he had the same problem with plumbing noise?

I'm bringing this back up to the top for you and I'll try to see if we can get some opinions for you.

    Hello,
The Durso elbow is too low in the overflow causing the water to drop and make noise. The water in the overflow should be 1/2" or less below the tank water.

Re: Equipment and return water noise

hey guys, well the thing i finally did was throttle down my pump. i do not think that this is a permanent solution because now my rate is going to be down to about 200 gph which is not good for a 72 gal tank. The problem is that there is a 1" hole in the bulkhead and a 1" "standpipe" about 6" high that cannot be removed for me to put a full 1.25" durso in there. What can I do to suplement and get more waterchanges in my aquarium?
