I have a 300 gl tank with a 3 inch sand bed. I was looking into adding a deep sand bed into my 90 gl. I have two 1 1/2" drain pipes that feed my sump. I was looking at adding a deep sand bed off of these pipes. One idea I have is to add a 5 gl bucket with sand in it. If I go with this idea. How deep should the sand be in the bucket? Any other idea?

Anthony Calfo discusses his ideas on remote deep sand beds in this thread and this thread. He's the guy who has popularized the idea of remote deep sand beds in a bucket. He also wrote an article on this topic for the October/November 2007 issue of Coral magazine.
