    75 gallon Eel tank filtration

Hey all! New to the forums.

I had a few questions regarding the best filtration for an eel tank.
I plan on having: A snowflake eel and a banded snake eel. (both as young as I can get them)

I would like a sump of some sort.
I plan on gettin 50-60lbs of liverock (maybe more depending on how it looks) and a 2-3 Inch live sand bed for the eels to bury in and also for biological filtration??

MAYBE somewhere down the line I might add a dwarf lion.

I plan on getting this skimmer as it is basically the top of the line-
We're Sorry. . . The page you requested is no longer available

I would like some top of the line equipment so that I don't Have to purchase things twice..

Thanks all! And good to be here!

    Hi Parasyte,

Your link doesn't work. What skimmer are you thinking of?

Hey. Sorry the link doesn't work.. Thats odd. Well anyways it is the Red Sea C-Skim 1200 protein skimmer. It looks amazing. Any other thoughts on type of filtration?

Re: 75 gallon Eel tank filtration

Let's see if this link works.

I'm not familiar with that particular skimmer but it looks like it should be adequate for your purposes. According to Red Sea, it is rated for "up to 100-gal hard corals (SPS)." It will work for your 75-gal tank but if you go to a much larger tank in the future, you will probably need to upgrade your skimmer.

As far as filtration is concerned, I believe that a good protein skimmer, decent live rock and a nice sand bed are really all you need. You may want to run carbon either 24/7 or just a couple of days a month. I like to run it 24/7 and change it out every six weeks. I used an ordinary mesh bag with about a cup of carbon that I placed in my sump in a spot where the water would have to flow through it. This was a 22-gal sump under a 120-gal reef aquarium.

For your 75-gal tank, I think 60-lbs of live rock and a nice 3" sand bed would be more than adequate, along with that Red Sea skimmer, to cover all of your filtration needs.

    Good luck!

P.S. -- Drs. Foster & Smith has exaggerated the manufacturer's claimed rating on this skimmer. F&S's ad copy reads: "For reef aquariums up to 300 gallons." That's NOT what Red Sea is claiming.

Here is what Red Sea is claiming:

The recommended aquarium volume ratings for the C-Skim have been calculated according to the optimum turnover rate per aquarium type, as determined by laboratory tests conducted by Red Sea.

Thanks man! I appreciate it! That skimmer looks pretty awesome... Im not much of a DIYer. And i am concerned about where to get a good sump.. I've heard that wet/drys are nitrate factories... dont want that! Someone was talking about a berlin type sump? Im not very familiar with those and what the difference is... I was thinkin about a fuge too... Im just not sure with what would be best..

    Thanks

Re: 75 gallon Eel tank filtration

Jeff at Lifereef filter systems built my sump. It was the LF1-150 model.

On that opening page, scroll down to what he calls the LifeRefugium II. That looks very nice. It's a sump with a built-in refugium compartment that drops in. Those are new.

His stuff isn't cheap but it's very well built. His skimmers are old-fashioned but they work and they're trouble-free. He's willing to design the sump system to accomodate any brand of protein skimmer if you don't want one of his.

    Drs. F&S price for that Red Sea C-Skim 1200 is $349.99 + $18.99 shpg.

Marine Depot's price is $349.99 + FREE shpg.
