I'm just in the process of setting up...have substrate and live rock in the tank. from what I could tell when I just tested my pH levels they were on the high end. what do I do to try and lower it?

Best thing to always do when stuff like that is high is to do a 25-30% waterchange.
29 Gallon(Biocube),1 Clownfish, 1 Cherub Angelfish
1 Skunk cleaner shrimp,1 Green mushroom
with the little chart that came with the test kit my best guess is the level was nearly 8.6 based off the color chart thing. I'm going to check it again tomorrow and see what happens and I have prob about 15-20 gallons of sw made up already so it shouldn't be too hard tofigure out.
You can live with a pH of 8.6 right now, although 8.5 or 8.4 would be better. I would not be concerned about an 8.6 pH reading.
