skimmer on timer?

I have an extra timer sitting around here and I remember reading something somewhere about putting a skimmer on a timer and have it only run at a certain time of the day or for a certain length. should I do this and if so, when?

I think some people shut it down during feedings so it doesn't syphon off $$$ food. If you have a power bar that you use to shut down your pumps during feedings just add it to that bar.

I ran my Beckett skimmer 12 hours on and 12 off, due to the POWER that it took to run it, but that was a LARGE skimmer. What size skimmer are we talking about here?
