    Overflow for 80 gallon question

Go easy on me, I'm new to overflows, sumps and returns.

What gph overflow box should I get for an 80 gallon? 600gph or 800gph? I plan on having a refugium in the sump with 2 or 3 powerheads in the tank for extra water movement.

I think either overflow would work, as long as I have a return pump that is powerful enough to run the overflow at least 80% capacity. Just need suggestions since I'm new to overflows and sumps, been running HOB gear for years.

Thanks in advance fellas, any info helps.

Take a look at this one. I had one on my 80 for at least 6 years.

Re: Overflow for 80 gallon question

Great, thanks Charlie. I was thinking about that one, or the one rated for 600gph, the cs90. I have 2 bakpaks and an aquafuge and have had no problems with CPR products. I found a cs100 factory second with the aqua lifter pump for $100 on ameka aquatics store on ebay, so I was planning on that. I can't decide on which return to use. For the cs90
(600gph) I was thinking the mag7, that would give me 480gph head pressure as it would be pumping back up 4 feet, using clear vinyl tubing on the return. With the 2 90 degree turns on the elbow running into the tank I was wondering if a mag9 would be better. But with the cs100 rated for 800gph I think a mag9 would be good.

What return pump did you use, or suggest? I plan on using a submersible in sump rather than an outside/dry return.

I'm gonna finish my DIY stand tomorrow, gotta skin it with 1/4" ply and build doors. Some trim on top and bottom, sand and stain it. I plan on having a removable center brace in front and back, but won't be removing them often, just for extra support.

I can't wait to have this sump set up, and won't have to look at the hang on gear. It's not bad to look at now with the 2 overflow boxes on the skimmers and the hob 'fuge, but when I only have an overflow box and return in the display, I think it will look much cleaner.

    Thanks for the reply.

Re: Overflow for 80 gallon question

I am using a 1200gph pump for the return Leddy, but I have it plumbed so the the excess goes back into the sump. I actuallt have the thing running close to wide open. It is a little Giant pump, and it is not a very good product, but it will do for right now.
Once you get things arranged, you will like the new setup a whole lot better, good luck!!!!
