BTW, hows the noise with the 1" SS's? With the tank running, and the canopy on the tank, is the noise from the SS noticeable? I've heard the 1" SS's are louder then the 3/4 model

I don't have a 3/4" model so I have no way to compare but the 1" model does have a bigger motor. I have had tanks for 17 years and this is the first main tank I have had that's NOT in the living room. It would take a whole lot of noise for me to notice. I'm about 5 feet from them now and don't hear em, but then there's 3 fans going in the canopy. When the fans are off I do hear them from 5 feet if I stop and listen, not from 10 feet though.....HTH

Mark,
What are the demensions of your Ampmaster 3000? You have you two SS's running on a closed loop with this pump? If so, where did you have the tank drilled for the 1.5" intake bulkhead? thanks, John |

John,
I think the pump is about 11" long, 6" wide and 8" tall....Yes, it all on a closed loop. I don't have a bulkhead drilled for the closed loop although it would loook better with it. My infeed to the pump looks very much like the picture at the bottom of this thread... Closed loops and plumbing them! pics plez |

Cool, looks like I'll be ordering a AM 3000.
One other question, how did you plumb from the pump to the SS's? Did you use 1.5" PVC connected to the top of the pump, then use a Y splitter and run two 1" PVC (or tubing) lines to the SS's? |

John,
I went up as high as I could with 1.5" PVC then used a T with 1.5-1 reducers in it, from there it was 1" PVC all the way to the SS. I couldn't use flex tubing because the turn was so tight it put a kink in the tubing. I use PVC line all the way to the last elbow that goes to the SS's then connected with about 2.5" of flex tubing. I also use unions so I could remove the SS's easy. Mark |

I'm going to have two 1.5", and two 3/4" holes drilled in the back glass. The 1.5" holes will be for the closed loop, and the other one for the drain line down to the sump. The 3/4" holes will be for the return line back into the tank. Anyone know if these 4 holes will weaken the integrity of the tank?
Just to recap, I'm having a custom overflow box made out of black acrylic and its gonna be siliconed in the middle of the back glass. The box will be 6"x6"x6". I didn't want to go with a full size dual overflow for the tank because of all the wasted space from those huge boxes. My neighbor made one for his tank and it works flawlessly...easily handles a Mag 12 return pump no problems. I'm gonna have a 1.5" bulkhead right behind the overflow in the back glass. That will be connected by a 1.5" tee fitting, and hard plumbed down to the sump. Right under the tee fitting will be a 1.5" gate valve to control the water level in the overflow box (I want to adjust the water level in the box so that its maybe an inch or so above the bulkhead so I don't suck in tons of air down into the sump). K, I'll be using a Sen 9 for a return pump and have the line split into the two 3/4" bulkheads that will be a few inches away from the oveflow box (one on each side). These will be right at surface level so when the pump is shut down, the siphon will instantly brake. These will also be aimed either straight forward or to the sides of the tank. Connected to the bulkhead, I'll probably use a couple links of black modular pipe with a flare nozzle Also, I'm gonna have a AM 3000 on a closed loop split into two 1" SS's. These SS's will be both corners of the back glass. Still thinking where I'm gonna have the tank drilled for the intake of the closed loop. Probably be maybe 8" or so under the overflow box. Does anyone see ANY potential problems with this setup before I proceed on? Any suggestion are welcomed. |

The hole drilled for the closed loop sounds good. Your plans look great. You will need to play around with the 1" SS's because them and the AM3000 are going to be too much flow for that tank. The pump can be restricted down to almost nothing without damaging the pump, you'll probably want to reduce the 1" SS output to 3/4" anyway so you can use some the different fittings that can be purchased......
BTW, what kind of lighting are you going to use? This is the hard part ![]() |

Oh really? Think the AM 300 with the two 1" SS's will be too much flow? Do you suggest a diff pump, or to put a 1.5" gate valve between the SS's and the pump? Maybe go with a Mag 24 instead? Do you find the pump wide open is too much for your tank as well? That extra 6" width you have probably handles the pump just right though.
So far looks like I'm gonna use the same lighting I have now. Two 250w HQI's and VHO actnics. Will probably sell my IC ballast and upgrade to a 660. That way I can run four 110w VHO actinics (I like a blue tank ). I'm gonna mount the pendants horizantal to the tank, and space them about 10" apart from one another. I'd rather have the center of the tank the brightest, and then have the light intensity fade a little on each side as you get to the ends of the tank. |

NO, by all means go with the Amp Master. This pump can be slowed down with ball valves. You will just have to play with it a bit. I have to slow mine down a little bit. You will be very happy with the pump and the SS's........

I agree, I had almost 90pound in my 55. I only have about 180lbs in my 150 and that might be a little too much for me.
BTW, I really like the Marshall isand rock from Jeff's |

I have 75lbs of Fiji LR from Harbour Aquatics now. Was actualy thinking of going with the rest all Marshall.
Have you been by Jeff's lately? The Marshall has been looking pretty good there? From the pictures on their website, I can't tell the diff between the Premium grade LR and the Ultra grade LR. Looks pretty much the same. If I do get it from there, I'll probbaly have them hand pick it for me...try to get some nice shapes. |

Mark, do you have any pics of your tank? I'd love to see them. Your also using SouthDown sand right? How many inches is your sandbed, and did you go with a coarser substrate on top...just to keep the SD sand in place?
I have about 5" of SD sand in my 58 with 1/2" of Carib Sea special grade SeaFlor sand as a top layer. But with the 120 I'm thinking of just using the SD sand and not the coarser stuff on top. |

John,
The Marshall island rock still ROCKS, the only down size to this rock is the size of it. He had a couple pieces that were 6"x 18" x 12" and Jeff called those "show pieces" other than that its all about football size maybe a little bigger maybe a little smaller. TON's of life on this rock......... Mark |

Mark,
Are you planning on heading back up to Jeff's within the next 2 weeks or so? Have to order my LR soon, wanted to know if it was still lookin good. Wanted to get a few decent sized pieces (maybe 15-20lb pieces), with some really nice shapes and life on them. |
