Where can I get a 36"x24"x24" tank?
I'm dieing to get my hands on a tank this size. Anyone know if Oceanic makes a tank this size...or will be making one this size? I have a 58 Oceanic right now, but would like a tank with an extra 6" depth to it.

Here is a list on the new Oceanic website showing dimensions of all their standard tanks: http://www.oceanicsystems.com/products_dimensions.html Ninong ![]()

hmm, I see they have a 36 1/2"x 24 1/2" x 24 1/2" tank under "Rectangular Custom Aqariums". Don't see anything about a stand for it though. I wonder how much they are charging for that tank.

JG,
Have you checked around at your LFS? Are there any tank builders in your area? |

My tank is 36x24x24 acrylic I had built localy. It cost me $350 with one over flow and black back. I also had the stand made localy for $300. I am very pleased with this tank and leaves alot of room for aquascaping. Only problem is I had the overflow put on the wrong side and have to look at it all the time, should have had it placed in the middle back of the tank.

JG,
great idea, this is a bloody brilliant size for a tank. I absolutely love my 3x2x2, 90g is plenty of water but nice size, plenty of width for gas exchange, just an all around great tank size. I got mine from an LFS here in Sydney, one corner overflow and a 30" high cabinet. I also got mine speically reinforced so there is no centre brace, and I love this too. You should be able to get someone to make it for you without too many problems, just make sure you get 10mm thick glass. I had no trouble getting mine, not sure about the manufacturers in the US but I imagine you should have little worry. Regards, Tom |

thanks for the replies guys
![]() I'm gonna head to a few LFS today and see if I can find out more info about the Oceanic 3'x2'x2' tank. They have it listed on there website, so I'm sure they've made a few of them...only problem is Oceanic gets a friggin premium for anything other then standard. There is a tank builder right here in Philadelphia. I could also check him out. I know he makes tanks in starphire, but will probably be a hell of a lot more money then IA. |

Hmm, for the cost of a custom 36"x24"x24" (90g) tank with stand and canopy, I can get a standard 120g Oceanic with stand and have a canopy made. That Pet Place sells the 120g tank and stand for $750. Can probably have the canopy done locally.
Only problem is I don't know if everything will fit in the stand...MyReef Skimmer(8"x10"x24"), top off resivour(15g high AGA tank), sump, and dual chamber reactor. Really isn't a problem getting the stuff to fit in my 58g Oceanic because I have the tank caddy corner on the wall, so the sump is in the stand and everything else is behind the tank in the corner. With the 120, I'd have it flat against the wall. |

What is the size of a standard 120 4x2x2? You have an extra foot in the width of the tank you have now and 6" deeper. I would think everything should fit. If not, you may have to get an oversized custom stand. I just bought a 36x18x16 custom acrylic tank, I will be using for a prop tank. I really think the 36x24x24 would be an awsome tank. An unusual size. Good luck with your search.

Andy,
Yeah, the 120 Oceanic in 4'x2'x2'. I was thinking of letting this custom tank builder in Philly build the stand and canopy for me. I can pick just the tank up for about $350 from "That Pet Place", and the tank builder wants $900 for the custom stand, hood, and to drill the tank. I'd be getting the "Show" 120, not RR. My neighbor makes the awesome overflow boxes at his work out of black acrlyic...its approximatly 6"x6"x6". He siliconed it right in the middle of the back glass in his 58g tank, and had the tank drilled in the back with a 1 1/2" bulkhead and runs that down to his sump....works really well. Think I'm gonna get him to make me one. He's using a Mag 12 on it and it handles it no problem. Really saves a lot of room, especially with the HUGE overflow boxes Oceanic puts in there tanks...really no need for all that wasted space. If I do gets this tank, was thinking of using two 3/4" Sea swirls on a closed loop run on a Mag 12 or 18. Would also have a closed loop at the bottom of the tank with a black modular pipe spray bar run with a Mag 7. Just trying to fgiure out how I'd route the return line back up to the tank. Might have a 1/2" bulkead on each seide of the overflow box right at surface water level, and have a link of modualr pipe with the fan shape nozzel....just split the return line into them. Would have to have them right at surface level though so shen the pumps are shut off, I don't get a lot of drain back into the sump. Last edited by JG; 07-26-2001 at 10:05 PM. |

John, If you are going to use the MAG pump to push both SS, I would opt for the MAG 18. I have a MAG 18 and 12 on a closed loop on my system and I like the 18 much better, especially if it will push two devices. The stand and canopy sound nice.
you confused me on the closed loop with the MAG 7. If it is a closed loop, you don't have to worry about it draining back to the sump. It won't drain at all or am I missing something? ![]() |

No, the Mag 7 would be on a closed loop..no worrying about draining back into the tank. Just worried about the return line from the sump draining back into the tank. Haven't figured out how I'm gonna plumb that line back into the tank yet.

Ah, OK...I was confuzzled. LOL I know Oceanic drills a small small hole in the return elbow to break the siphon on their overflow/returns. It is on the underside of the elbow. Maybe something like that.

Guys, couple questions...
If I'm gonna use the Mag 18 on a closed loop split into two Seaswirls, what size Seaswirl should I get...1/2", 3/4" ? Also, I don't think I'm gonna do the closed loop at the bottom of the tank with the Mag 7 on the spraybar. Would the Mag 18 on the Seaswirls and Sen 9 return pump be sufficient circulation for this tank? One other thing....I was thinking of having the tank drilled for the closed loop on the back glass, right in the middle about two thirds the way down from the top. I'd have a bulkhead with a black screen for the intake. Can you guys see any problems with the placement of the intake? Would I need to get to it at all? If Its somethign I would need to get to often (cleaning, etc.), I might have to have it drilled in another are. Last edited by JG; 07-27-2001 at 04:21 PM. |

I don't think that is a problem where you want to put the drain for the closed loop. I have not had to do anything to mine in over 5 months of service. If you are going to use the MAG 18 pushing 2 SS, I would buy the 3/4". The MAG 18 has 3/4" outlet and is actually recommended being used with 1" pipe. You may be able to get away with the 1" model.

Been thinking about using the Dolphin Ampmaster instead of the Mag 18 to push both Sea Swirls. I'd definitly use the 1" SS's if I used this pump.
Would the ampmatser be too much of a pump for the two 1" SS's? What kind of water pressure can I expect to come out of the SS's using this pump? Thinking the water pressure coming out the SS's might be too great for some corals in my tank. |

Really golfish?
Your using that same combo right? Has is the flow out of the Sea Swirls? I want a good amount of flow, but not too violent. |

John, you could probably have the Ampmaster run the skimmer, and two 1" sea swirls. Be sure to set-up a valve manifold so you can control the flow of each return seperately. It would hurt the pump to slow it down.
I obviously don't have one, but from what I've heard they are pretty nice, and have a lot of waterflow. I'd run the 1" SS regardles of pump size or output. It'll allow more flow at less velocity. Total water energy is more important than the velocity.... -Perry |

Yeah, I'll definitly get the 1" SS's...prolly have the run off the ampmaster.
I'd run both SS's and the skimmer off the ampmaster, but I'm worried about when I turn the pump off, the skimmer and waste collector will be floaded with water from the siphon effect from the SS's BTW what are the demensions of the Ampmaster? I'm assuming I'd have to have the tank drilled with a 1.5" bulkead(intake) for the closed loop |
